Art lovers, this article is for you! As a multicultural city and a future European capital of culture, Timisoara has a very active art scene. One of the biggest contemporary art events in our city is Baroque || Urban, which will host its third edition this year, between August 15th and October 15th.
About Baroque || Urban
Baroque || Urban is a local contemporary art event organised by the local organisation META Spatiu. The pilot edition of Baroque Urban took place in 2016 and was focused on neo-baroque, as an exploration of baroque and modernity. Romanian artist Gheorghe Fikl and French artist Josepha Blanchet played with the resurrection of the baroque current during this first event.
As the pilot edition was a success, the event was reiterated in 2017, with a new exhibition. The highlight of the 2017 edition was the work “Meating” by contemporary artist Virgilius Moldovan.
WOMAN, ALL TOO WOMAN – art by women
The 2018 edition of Baroque || Urban seems to want to take things even further. This edition is bolder and more complex than the previous ones. This year’s event is titled WOMAN, ALL TOO WOMAN and is, as you already suspect, focused on art created by women. What does it mean to be a woman and an artist? That is what we are about to find out.
The team behind this year’s exhibition is all female, as are the artists whose work will be exhibited during the event. WOMAN, ALL TOO WOMAN, curated by Andreea Foanene, will bring together the works of over 30 artists, gathering a collection of over 120 artworks.
The artists who will be exhibiting are: Marina Abramovic, Aura Balanescu, Josépha Blanchet, Elena Bobi Dumitrescu, Alina Cioara, Andra Ciocoiu, Dana Constantin, Fantanariu Suzana, Andreea Heresanu, Emilia Jagica, Aurora Kiraly, Adriana Lucaciu, Andreea Medar, Liliana Mercioiu, Jelena Micić, Mihailescu Doina, Silvia Moldovan, Ada Muntean, Ana Maria Negară, Simona Nutiu Gradoux, Carmen Nicolau, Marilena Preda Sanc, Florica Prevenda, Kristina Ratiu Demuth, Axenia Roşca, Linda Saskia Menczel, Eva Maria Schartmüller, Serghiuta-Popa Diana, Alina-Ondine Slimovschi, Oana Stoian, Nada Stoici, Mindora Tulcan, Agnes Varnai, Simona Vilau, Victoria Zidaru.
“Balkan Baroque” by Marina Abramovic
Marina Abramovic, one of the most famous contemporary artists worldwide, will be part of Urban || Baroque 2018 with her installation “Balkan Baroque”. The installation has received a Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1997. The work brings forward stereotypes of the Balkans, but also the brutality of war, tragedy, nationalism, and madness. An interesting and controversial work of art for sure.
The exhibition will also host a screening about the artist’s work “Balkan Epic Erotic”, created around the same time as “Balkan Baroque” and portraying a contrasting side of the Balkans – one of naivety, purity, nature, and love.
When and where?
The works gathered for WOMAN, ALL TOO WOMAN will be displayed between August 15th and October 15th at the Timisoara Art Museum (no. 1, Unirii Square). For more details about the exhibitions and future conferences, you can follow the official event page.
